Thoughts on the Flipkart SBI Credit Card

Positives of the Flipkart SBI Credit Card

7.5% and 5% cashback on Myntra and Flipkart, respectively

The Flipkart SBI credit card gives accelerated cashback on the Flipkart ecosystem. 7.5% cashback on Myntra and 5% on Flipkart and Cleartrip.

Separate cashback capping for every category

The Flipkart SBI credit card has separate cashback capping for Flipkart, Cleartrip, Myntra and preferred merchants. Thus, in theory, you can get INR16,000 in cashback in one quarter across the 4 categories.

Cashback limit is set per quarter.

One positive of the Flipkart SBI credit card is that the cashback limit is set for the calendar quarter. Thus, you can plan your purchases in one particular month and still not worry about hitting a monthly milestone.

Negatives of the Flipkart SBI Credit Card

Long exclusion list

Like with other SBI credit cards, this credit card also has a long exclusion list. Most of the common spending categories are excluded from cashback on this card.

No Rupay variant

Currently, the Flipkart SBI credit card is not available in the RuPay variant. I am sure they will launch it soon.

1% cashback on other categories

Since this credit card excludes most spend categories from cashback. They could have increased the cashback on remaining categories to at least 1.5%

How does this card compare to the Axis Flipkart credit card

The Flipkart SBI credit card, barring a few small differences, is almost identical to the Axis Flipkart credit card.

One difference is that the list of preferred partners is slightly different. PVR and Uber are common for both credit cards. Axis has Swiggy and Cult.Fit as preferred partners, whereas Flipkart SBI has Zomato and Netmeds as preferred partners.

The other difference is the definition of “quarter”. SBI Flipkart simply has a calendar quarter for quarterly capping. On the other hand, the Axis Flipkart card follows the statement quarter. An illustration is given below. Many questions come to my mind as to how that will work. Simply put, the Axis Flipkart approach is more cumbersome, typical of Axis.

Comparing the Flipkart SBI credit card with other cashback credit cards

The Flipkart SBI credit card is primarily a cashback credit card. Thus, comparing it with other cashback credit cards. Honestly, the Flipkart SBI card pales in comparison with other cashback cards. Not only does the recently launched SBI PhonePe Black credit card stand out, but even the Axis Airtel credit card, HSBC Live+(Apply Now), and the Amex MRCC and Amex Gold charge cards are more rewarding than the Flipkart SBI credit card.

Below is the snapshot for easy comparison:

Should you apply for this credit card?

No. The SBI Flipkart is a mediocre credit card. The only utility for this credit card is for heavy spenders in the Flipkart ecosystem. Maybe, if you regularly hit the quarterly caps on the Axis Flipkart credit card, then you should take the SBI Flipkart credit card. This will double your quarterly cashback limit for just an INR 500 a year fee.

Outside of the Flipkart ecosystem, there is hardly any utility for this credit card. Honestly, you will be better off taking other cashback credit cards that are much more rewarding than the SBI Flipkart credit card.
